Starvation-    Frank grows up in a family that does not earn enough money to live a proper life. When situations were tough as it is, Malachy their father would drink away all the money he had. The family are always hungry, deprived of nourishment in their hearts and in their bodies.

Class-   Throughout their whole lives the McCourt family have been laughed at by society, due to their social class. Frank looks at America, as a country with opportunities.

Symbols

Ashes-   Ashes are dark, filthy, and the after effect of  burning wood or cigarettes. Angela smokes in great numbers, and when her husband leaves her she finds comfort in staring in her ashtray and in the fireplace. The ashes have been the end of the fire, which symbolizes the end of their marriage or the end of her hope.

Eggs-   Eggs symbolize luxury in Limerick. Not many people can afford them. When the family purchase eggs, they are happy and feel satisfied.
